What Noise Does A Failing Transmission Make?

Your car should not be making funny sounds as you drive. It is good to know what different sounds mean about the health of your vehicle. Some of the noises are an indication that the transmission is failing. When the transmission makes noises, it indicates a severe problem that the car requires the attention of an experienced mechanic. Here are some of the noises that come from a failing transmission system.

Whining

You may notice a whining sound coming from the engines as you drive the vehicle. Unfortunately, whining does not point to a particular problem with the transmission as different issues may produce the sound. However, you may narrow down to the exact cause by doing the following:

• Try to engage the reverse gear. If the whining gets higher with the revere, it means that the fluid line of the transmission has been clogged. In most cases, a clogged fluid line points to a more significant issue.

• On an automatic transmission, if the whine gets louder when in gear, it points to a problem with the torque converter. On the other hand, if the noise appears when the gear is on neutral with the clutch engaged, the input shaft or bearings have a problem.

• If the noises get louder as you drive faster, it means the speed of the vehicle also affects the transmission, and the problem is on the final drive of the transmission.

Grinding

Grinding is common with automatic transmissions. When it happens, it means that there is a problem with the planetary gear system. Your car's automatic transmission depends on the gear system to take in various inputs when driving. Therefore, if the gear system fails, you may experience extensive damage to the transmission too.

Gurgling Noise

A gurgling noise is similar to the noise that occurs when water is sucked up a pipe. This noise usually occurs when the fluid levels in your transmission are insufficient. However, the noise can also be caused by excessive air intake in the fluid line. The noise is noticeable when shifting gears while driving. Driving with a transmission system that is low on fluids may damage the moving parts.
