The Importance of Proper Vehicle Alignments

Posted on

Imagine trying to walk straight with your feet pointing in one direction and your hips pointing in another. It would take a lot of effort to stay balanced and head in the right direction, not to mention the extra strain this would put on you!

Just as walking with your body properly aligned is easier on you and requires less effort, the same goes for your vehicle. A vehicle alignment allows your car to handle correctly, reduces wear and tear, and improves fuel economy. Here at Longview Auto, we hold alignments in high regard. Not only do they give you more control over your vehicle and increase your overall driving safety, but they're crucial to the life of your tires.

Our goal from the start has been to keep our customers out on the road, heading to their next adventure. Proper alignments are crucial to achieving this goal. This is why we offer a FREE alignment any time a customer of ours purchases four new tires*. During your vehicle’s life, brakes are slammed, sharp turns are taken, and potholes hit. This gradually wears down components and causes your wheels to shift, which can set your alignment off and result in your car pulling in one direction. This is a natural process and nothing serious, but it can accelerate tire damage. By aligning your tires, we return the angle of your vehicle’s wheels to manufacturer’s specifications.

A proper wheel alignment does four crucial things:

  • Improves handling
  • Reduces tire wear and provides maximum tire life
  • Enhances fuel economy
  • Increases overall driving safety

Research shows that the average car is driven around 12,000 miles per year. A car with a toe adjustment just .34 degrees (just .017 inches) out of specification has dragged its tires sideways for more than 68 miles in only one year.

So how can you tell if your car needs an alignment? Have your car inspected if you notice any of the following:

  • Excessive or uneven tire wear
  • Steering wheel pulling to the side
  • Feeling of looseness or wandering
  • Your steering wheel not centered when driving straight
  • It's been 6,000 miles or 6 months since your last alignment check
  • Drop in fuel economy

Your car’s manual should tell you exactly how often you should check your alignment. As a general rule though, it’s a good idea to have your vehicle’s alignment inspected twice a year or every 6,000 miles, or sooner if you notice one of the symptoms mentioned above. Keep your tires properly aligned, and you’ll not only save money on repairs and maintenance, but your vehicle will always be ready to go for that next adventure. Keep going with Longview Auto & Tire.
